Junk Senate Junk Mail

Author: 2011/02/02

Not one year after the CTF led a successful campaign to end the practice of MPs sending partisan junk mail to constituents outside their ridings, the Senate has decided to start the practice.

According to QMI Agency, Senators last month gave themselves the right to blanket the country with mailings attacking opposition parties. The only restriction was that they not attack other Senators.

So far there have been reports of Tory junk mailers going into the ridings of Liberal MP Anita Neville of Winnipeg and Liberal MP David McGuinty of Ottawa.

When questioned about sending a mailer into the riding of MP Anita Neville, Conservative Senator Don Plett arrogantly responded: “change your policies if you don’t like what I am saying.” This comes from an unelected political appointee! Seriously. Who do these people think they are?

Given that junk mail sent by MPs tallied $10-million a year, it’s anyone’s guess what the Senate will spend.

Chair of the Senate’s Internal Economy Committee David Tkachuk says the mailing issue would likely be "revisited" in February or March. Let’s send him and others a message that they revisit the issue today!

Of course this issue could easily be resolved if Prime Minister Harper and Opposition Leader Ignatieff simply called their leaders in the Senate and told them to stop this nonsense now.

Tax dollars should not be used for politics. If politicians want to run TV ads and send junk mail attacking each other they should do it with their own money. Enough wasting tax dollars for their partisan garbage.

Please use the "Contact Lawmakers" link below and send a message to demand this waste be stopped immediately.
